Peter Panhuys with family and friends (1575)

Moses with the Tablets of the Law in the middle of the Israelites (Maerten de Vos, 1574-1575) The Antwerp families Panhuys and Hooftman portray themselves as the people of Israel on this special group portrait. The result is an immense panel with a large number of figures, shown in bright colors. The families are grouped around Moses, who holds the tablets of the law. The figures in the background wear contemporary clothing. People can literally read their names from close by at times. Other bystanders are dressed in oriental. Before the feet of Moses lie the gifts that the Israelites gave him.
